I became engaged with sustainability issues after seeing the levels of material waste being generated on major motion picture film productions - productions with budgets of £30 million plus - in 2011.
Having witnessed relative poverty in the UK from my hometown, Dundee, I was aware of the value of basic material possessions, and I wanted to find a way to put much of this material, often reusable household goods, into reuse by others.
This lead to me becoming engaged with newly emerging sustainability initiatives at that time, learning from them to develop further knowledge about wider sustainability issues, and doing pro bono work to help to bring together groups of people in our sector who were also interested in this emerging area of work in our industry.
After having gained a scholarship to do an MSc in Environmental Management, I joined Culture for Climate Scotland (then Creative Carbon Scotland) as their lead researcher in the screen industries to identify where the Scottish industry sat within its UK and Europe wide contexts in relation to its initial approaches to environmental sustainability initiatives, “Greening Scotland’s Screen Industry Report”.
After the conclusion of that research, I worked in the newly created role of 'Screen Sustainability Manager for Scotland', a role born out of that research to help provide publicly funded systemic support to the Scottish industry, for its first two years of inception to set it up.
My main learning from that time was in recognising the disconnect between existing efforts on a UK wide level towards environmental sustainability, with social sustainability issues. This lead me to create the ‘Accessibility in the UK & Ireland Film & TV Industries Resource Map’ to help to start to bridge that gap.
Since returning to productions in the capacity of production buying and greens services, I have brought with me vast knowledge of the uk wide sustainability for screen, and I work to help make Set Decoration and Art Departments in the film & tv industry that I work on as sustainable as possible.

In September 2025, I created a Sustainability in the UK Film & TV Industries Resource Map to share widely the resources I have come across since being a part of the sustainability movement in the UK since 2011.
The map includes links to resources for; Social Sustainability & The Just Transition, Education, Training, Consultancy & Toolkits, International Resources for Studios & Productions, Procurement, Reuse & the Circular Economy, Carbon Calculation & Renewable Energy, Climate Resilience & Adaptation, Sustainability Focused Production Companies, Biodiversity & Sustainable Food Supply, Networks & Events, and Climate Inspired Screen Content.
